Jackalope Hotel, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Boutique bolthole Jackalope Hotel offers visitors an experience that is, at once, mystical and theatrical.
The horned jackrabbit of North American folklore, which gives the hotel its name, is in evidence everywhere: in the arresting sculpture outside and in the names of the cocktail bar Flaggerdoot (collective noun for jackalopes) and in fine-dining restaurant Doot, Doot, Doot (an “alpha” jackalope) – where executive chef Guy Stanaway plies his trade. The vast grounds of Willow Creek Vineyard, in which the hotel is situated, provide a natural counterpart to the stark grandiosity of hotel owner Louis Li’s 46-room masterpiece. Sue Wallace
